How did you first get involved with CIDQ and why did you decide to volunteer?
After teaching a local NCIDQ prep class for several years, I was looking for my next challenge. A former professor and mentor, who also has volunteered with CIDQ, encouraged me to apply. I decided to volunteer because I wanted to play a role in shaping the exam and supporting the next generation of certified interior designers.
Tell us a little about your most recent CIDQ-specific volunteering experience
My most recent CIDQ volunteer experience was serving on the IDFX Writing Committee in January 2025. It was a jam-packed weekend as we worked to align exam content with the upcoming blueprint changes. The experience was both rewarding and humbling—being in a room with such knowledgeable designers from diverse specialties across the U.S. and Canada reinforced the depth and breadth of our profession. It was also a full-circle moment for me, as I had the opportunity to volunteer alongside the professor who taught my first design studio in undergrad. I’m looking forward to being back with the writing committee in June to continue our work.
When did you become NCIDQ Certified and why?
I became NCIDQ Certified in April 2022. Earning this certification had been a goal of mine since college. On one of my last days as an undergrad, a professor reminded us that while our time at the university was ending, the journey to licensure was just beginning. That message really stuck with me. Graduating from a CIDA-accredited program, I took and passed the IDFX shortly after graduation and completed the remaining exams as soon as I met the required work experience hours. Becoming NCIDQ Certified was a significant milestone in my career, validating my knowledge, experience, and dedication to the profession.
What would you tell a colleague who is considering taking the NCIDQ Exam?
Go for it! The NCIDQ Exam is a valuable step in your career, reinforcing your expertise and commitment to protecting public health, safety, and welfare. It takes dedication, but with a solid study plan, it’s absolutely achievable and well worth it! Seek out others in your community who are also studying, having a support system makes the process easier and keeps you motivated.
What advice would you give to those considering volunteering their time with CIDQ?
Volunteering with CIDQ is an incredibly rewarding experience that allows you to give back to the profession while gaining valuable insight into the NCIDQ Exam process. You’ll collaborate with passionate designers from all across the US and Canada, expand your knowledge, and help shape the future of our industry. If you’re considering it, don’t hesitate—there’s so much to learn, contribute, and take away from the experience!
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I want to travel to 30 countries before I turn 30. I’m traveling to country #25 next month!
The NCIDQ Certification is more than just a credential—it’s a testament to the expertise and responsibility that interior designers carry in protecting public health, safety, and welfare. As our profession continues to evolve, it’s critical that we uphold these standards while also adapting to new challenges. I’m excited to see how our industry continues to grow, and I encourage designers at all stages of their careers to stay engaged, keep learning, and support the next generation.
